A Pop-Up workshop with a difference !

Today we had the pleasure of working with Yr 4 pupils from St Georges Beneficial School and their teacher Mr Beech.

Artist and Lecturer Suzie Darcel worked with the children, showing them how to make their own Pop-up books.

They started by looking at and sketching objects and items collected for our current exhibition, ‘Working Title’. Having been shown how to make various types of levers and armatures, they set to work on their own designs, working directly into a printed book. They were encouraged to draw into, cut and stick the actual books they were given, which caused a bit of a stir as the children were used to respecting books and not damaging them (not to mention that their teacher Mr Beech is a published children’s author !!). They were able to discuss and experience the process of breaking or re-working something in order to make a new piece of art.

By the end of the day, they had all made some wonderful and very humorous  pop-ups ! We really enjoyed working with Year 4 from St Georges, and look forward to seeing them again.
